# AEGIS Non-Commercial & Ethical-Use License

This license governs use of the AEGIS — Field Security Operations Suite and its
source code, documentation, and assets (the "Software"). By using, copying,
modifying, or distributing the Software, you ("You") agree to these terms.

> conflict): Anyone may use, modify, and share this Software for **non-commercial**
> purposes, **for free**, as long as it is **not used for any illegal or unethical
> purpose**. Commercial/business use requires separate written permission. The

This is a source-available license. It is intentionally **not** an OSI-approved
open-source license, because it restricts the field of use (non-commercial) and
purpose (lawful and ethical).

## 1. Grant of License

Subject to the conditions and limitations below, the Licensor grants You a
worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use, run, copy, study, modify,
and distribute the Software and modified versions of it, **solely for
Non-Commercial Purposes**.

## 2. Definitions

- **Non-Commercial Purposes** means use that is not primarily intended for or
  directed toward commercial advantage or monetary compensation. This includes
  personal use, use by individuals for their own safety or that of family and
  associates, education, academic research, journalism, humanitarian and
  not-for-profit activities, and evaluation. Use by or for a for-profit
  organization in the course of its business is **not** a Non-Commercial Purpose.
- **Commercial Use** means any use that is not a Non-Commercial Purpose,
  including offering the Software (or a service based on it) to third parties for
  a fee, or using it in the operations of a for-profit entity.

## 3. Conditions

3.1. **Attribution & notice.** You must retain this license file and all
copyright and attribution notices in all copies or substantial portions of the
Software.

3.2. **Same terms.** If You distribute the Software or derivative works, You must
do so under this same license, and may not impose further restrictions that
contradict it.

3.3. **No misrepresentation.** You must not misrepresent the origin of the
Software or imply endorsement by the authors.

## 4. Lawful and Ethical Use (mandatory)

The license granted in Section 1 is expressly conditioned on lawful and ethical
use. You may **not** use the Software, and the license does not permit use of the
Software:

a. for any purpose that violates applicable local, national, or international
   law, including data-protection, privacy, surveillance, export-control, and
   anti-discrimination laws;

b. to surveil, locate, profile, or track any individual without a lawful basis
   and, where required, that person's informed consent — except for protecting
   the safety of personnel who have consented to such protection;

c. to stalk, harass, intimidate, endanger, or facilitate harm to any person;

d. to target individuals or groups on the basis of race, ethnicity, national
   origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or
   other protected characteristics;

e. to support, plan, or carry out violence, repression, human-rights abuses, or
   other clearly unethical activity; or

f. to develop, design, or deploy weapons, or to provide material support to such
   activity.

The Software is intended for **defensive duty-of-care and personal-safety**
purposes. Any use inconsistent with that intent and with the prohibitions above
is outside the scope of this license.

## 5. Commercial Use

Commercial Use is **not** granted by this license. To use the Software for
Commercial Use, You must obtain separate written permission from the Licensor.

## 6. Termination

This license and the rights granted under it terminate automatically and
immediately if You breach any of its terms, including Section 4. Upon
termination You must cease all use and destroy your copies, except that Sections
7 and 8 survive.

## 7. No Warranty

THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR
IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS
FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. The Software is not a
substitute for professional security, legal, medical, or risk-management advice,
and the authors make no representation that it is fit for protecting any person.

## 8. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS OR
CONTRIBUTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES, OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN
ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT, OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF, OR IN CONNECTION
WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.
